Radiation Lobe Decomposition for Directivity Patterns

Abstract:
We propose a decomposition of sound source directivity patterns into a set of radiation lobes. The radiation lobes are described parametrically by their orientation, peak magnitude and two-dimensional curvature and provide valuable information for the analysis of directivities of musical instruments. Moreover, each radiation lobe can be re-synthesized as minimum-norm spherical harmonic directivity. The decomposition into radiation lobes permits a simplification of the directivity pattern for reproduction by neglecting low-magnitude lobes and by reducing the spherical harmonics order. Hereby, the decomposition approach facilitates practical trade-offs in storage and rendering of directivity patterns.
