Abstract: The genesis of ablated material during pulsed laser ablation in liquids (PLAL) is diagnosed in situ by time-resolved X-ray scattering methods and visible light diagnostics. We will report on the basic findings of the time scale of particle generation and ripening in noble metal targets, which is intimately linked to the dynamics of the transient bubble formed by liquid evaporation and permanent gas production. As special emphasis is given to speciation. Ablation in zinc shows a sequence of speciation of the ablated material, which finally ends in oxidized ripened nanoparticles.
