Groovuator - A Haptic Feedback System to improve Musical Interaction between a Drummer and a Bass Guitar Player

Abstract:
When playing a musical performance, the interaction between a bass guitar player and a drummer may be disturbed due to a lack of acoustic feedback from the other musician, e.g. large reverb and additional disturbing noises, resulting in undesirable effects such as playing asynchronously, and therefore a decrease in quality of the overall music experience for the listener. In this paper a supporting system, the Groovuator, is presented. This tool is capable of providing the musician with vibrotactile feedback, generated from the partner instrument ‘s output, in order to deliver additional information and therefore improve stability in timing and synchronization. In the first part of this paper, different actuator types are compared regarding their suitability within a musical context, including a perceptual experiment. In the second part the system's influence on musical disturbing situations is analysed.
