Abstract:

Hearing-impaired listeners can have a difficulty with processing Interaural Time Delays (ITDs) at low frequencies. In normal hearing listeners, these ITDs are known to contribute to a speech intelligibility in multi-talker settings when the talkers are spatially separated instead of collocated. Therefore, the loss of ITD processing in hearing impaired listeners may be a cause for a reduced benefit of spatial hearing in multi-talker settings. In this contribution, we will explore whether a conversion of Interaural Time Delays to Interaural Level Differences (ILDs) could also mediate the same spatial benefit as is seen with ITD information. In this study, speech intelligibility for normal hearing listeners in multi-talker scenarios will be compared between a situation with removed ITD cues, simulating a spatial hearing deficit, and a situation where ITD cues are converted into ILD cues. In addition, full HRTFs will be used for rendering the multi-talker scenarios. As part of this contribution, algorithmic methods will be presented that do the ITD to ILD conversion for simulated binaural signals that represent various challenging acoustic scenes such as multi-talker settings.
