Panel Discussion on Feedback Perturbation and Eye-Tracking During Phonetic Experiments

Abstract:
Speech production and perception involves the use of fine phonetic detail to coordinate speech movements and rapidly understand what is being said in real time. The methods of feedback perturbation and eye-tracking have been used to shed light on these processes. Importantly, both methods tap production and perception mechanisms as they are used in real time. Feedback perturbation during speech production specifically targets the regulatory mechanisms listeners use to adapt productions based on how they perceive their productions. Eye-tracking experiments focus on the investigation of the perceptual process based on information in the signal. The present contribution should give the opportunity to discuss the (dis)advantages and prospects of studies using feedback perturbation or eye-tracking in phonetic research.
