Abstract:
Panel discussion on the use of realtime mri and high-speed videos in phonetic researchThis contribution aims at discussing two direct imaging methods looking deeper in articulatory and phonation mechanisms, compared to other methods presented within this section. Whilst rtRMI has only been reasonably applicable for phonetic research for a short time, high-speed videos are used already for some time, however, both methods were strongly advanced recently.RtMRI is used to analyse movements in the entire vocal tract, providing dynamic information about the acoustic-articulatory relationship in phonetic segments. This is specifically useful for the description of articulators which would otherwise be hidden from plain view (e.g., in pharyngeal or nasal segments). High-speed videos are used to visualize the process of vocal fold vibration, thus focusing on suprasegmentals (e.g., in modal voice vs. different voice qualities, typical vs. atypical speech). The goal is to launch a deeper discussion of the experiments using rtMRI and high-speed videos presented in previous contributions within this session. We will address issues such as practicability/access, costs, time it takes for conducting the experiments and the analyses, ethics.
