Medial Superior Olive Model and Subjective Performance

Abstract:
The Medial Superior Olive Model consists of subsequent steps: 1) auditory periphery, 2) binaural processing, 3) central processing and 4) ideal observer (Sanda, Marsalek, Brain Res, 2012). Originally we designed this as numerical model with standard auditory periphery, action potential processing in the binaural part and central parts and ideal observer as output module. Now we are able to formulate most of the model computation analytically.We arrive to best estimates for neuronal signaling with the use of just noticeable difference and other psycho-acoustical parameters formulated as features of the ideal observer. We describe spike timing jitter and its role in the spike train processing. We study dependence of spike trains on the sound frequency. All parameters are accompanied with detailed estimates of their values and variability. Intervals bounding all the parameter from lower and higher sides are discussed.We propose subjective measurement method taking into account time and space granularity of the processed signals. Finally we discuss relation between subjectively and objectively obtained performances of individual subjects.
