Abstract: The Ambisonic order defines the spatial resolution and the number of required channels. Especially in mobile VR/AR applications, it is desirable to save computational resources by using lower orders. This contribution evaluates the influence of the Ambisonic order on the perception of diffuse reverberation when played back over headphones using the Magnitude Least Squares decoder. The evaluation compares 1st- to 6th-order playback to a 7th-order reference in a listening experiment. The experiment uses speech and a transient sound as audio signals. The diffuse reverberation is either created by a feedback delay network or by the late part of a measured 1st-order room impulse response that has been spatially enhanced using the spatial decomposition method. The results reveal that lower orders are sufficient for binaural playback of diffuse reverberation.
